Teacher Appreciation Week. What do teachers really want?

School teachers are special and should be celebrated. Teacher Appreciation Week allows us to show that we are grateful for their generous hearts.

When is Teacher Appreciation Week?

National Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated during the first full week of May. National Teacher Appreciation Day, AKA National Teacher Day, is celebrated on that first Tuesday (of the first full week in May.)

What do teachers really want for gifts?

Keeping in mind that every teacher is different, here is a starting list. Still, we'd love to have you comment with ideas your teachers have enjoyed in the past.

  • A note, a card, flowers or a picture.
  • Something the entire class signed. Cut out block letters that say: "Thank You for Helping Us Grow!" Then, have students create a flower from construction paper and write their names along the stem.
  • Offer to volunteer. Coverage for one class period, help with a classroom task like putting up a bulletin board or grading papers.
  • Permission to skip one meeting of their choice.
  • Relief from recess, lunch, or another duty.
  • Gift cards. When utilizing the gift card, teachers have the freedom to purchase things they want or need. Both school and personal purchases can be made using a gift card. Gift cards allow educators to delight in something special. Remember that the gift card's value is not as significant to educators as the thoughtfulness in which it was given.
  • Refill their supplies. Pencils, paper, expo markers, and pens are commonly required in classrooms. This is just a small selection of what could be donated. Most teachers purchase teaching materials with their own money, and items have become more expensive.
  • Fill a basket with goodies. Gift baskets are fun to personalize and put together several small things that your teacher will love. You can choose a themed basket, such as a movie night, spa day, or sweets, or do a mix and match of goodies.

Stumped with what to write on the card or handwritten note? Here are a few options you can personalize for your child's teachers.
  • "From ABCs to red, white, and blue; to history and mathematics too, all I want to say is a big THANK you!"
  • "We are blessed to have a teacher as wonderful as you are. Wishing you a Teacher's Day that's full of joyous moments!"
  • "All the efforts and hard work you invest in bringing out the best in your students can never be repaid in just words. We can only feel grateful for having a teacher like you!"

Remember that teacher appreciation week is simply about saying "Thank You" to a teacher in a unique way. These fantastic humans give such a significant amount of time and work throughout the year to provide students with the best education possible. When purchasing a gift, keep in mind that the thought behind the present is much more important than the price.
